The mandarin duck (Aix galericulata) is a perching duck species native to East Asia.

Perhaps one of the best known and loved of all of the wild species, the mandarin is easy to house and care for.  They do not require a permit to breed and sell.

Mandarins molt twice a year, with the male turning to white like the female during the summer. He will regain his flashy plumage just before breeding season to attract a mate.

Mandarins prefer to nest above ground in a wood duck style box. The hen will lay 9-12 eggs and are excellent parents.   They are winter hardy and do not require as much space as other species.

Mandarins are best kept in pairs, not trios. 

I do not sell mandarin eggs or ducklings.  Juvenile pairs will be available early summer or fall.
